Venue: Fitzgeralds Park, Cork City, Ireland
Date: Sunday, 8th June, 2008
Time: 1 – 5pm
On Sunday, June 8th 2008 Cork will host the first Annual International Mad Pride Day. A fun filled day for all the family at Fitzgerald’s Park.
This important event will be highlighting the normality of Madness to the wider community in an effort to break down barriers and open minds to the need to address one of the country’s hidden problems.
So what is Mad Pride about?
Mad Pride is about fun, community, family and facing up to the fact that Mental Illness does not have to be a lonely or hopeless affair.
The day will include: normality tests involving bananas and rubber chickens, roaming groups of clown doctors, live music, street theatre, circus and walkabout acts, chill out areas, games, storytelling and face painting for the kids as well as a fantastically delicious food market
Mad Pride is not about bombarding people with pamphlets extolling the virtues of one approach over another it is more to show the world that Madness is an everyday occurrence that affects us all and can be dealt with openly, lovingly and without stigma.

Hello everyone. I’m really proud of everyone involved in this – John McCarthy is the only one I know but I’m sure there are others working away at it. Hope the weather’s great next weekend and see ye down the park.

Hiya,
I am a student by night in psychology in dublin. Originally from waterford. I think this was a fantastic event to actually get realised! John McCarthy has pushed the anti psycho surgery bill and this is a fantastic achievement. The strong minority well known voices in the Seanad feel the movement growing and we now know that the government will bend under pressure not from within their govt ranks – it is public pressure not internal govt push .. who in the govt will admit to having mad people related to them or in their midst. But the veil will slip and the Vision for Change report will be enacted and the money promised delivered. Their are custodians of mental health in ireland – one is John McCarthy! And his ‘maddness’ is infectious…roll on the mad times!!!
